Adders are rarely found in gardens and only bite when threatened (Fred Holmes)WILDLIFE INFORMATION SERVICE

Frequently Asked Questions about... snakes:

I think I have adders in my garden, what shall I do?

What to do if you / someone has been bitten by an adder:

First aid for adder bite is simple:

Remain calm - if you are with someone who has been bitten, reassure them.
Immobilise the affected limb (do not bandage) and remove any constrictions (tight clothing, jewellery).
Get someone to drive you to hospital or call an ambulance.
Be aware of your medical history (allergies, etc) - standard hospital treatment is anti-histamines and adrenaline; anti-venom can be toxic to some individuals.

Always seek medical advice if you have been bitten by and adder. Though painful, hundreds of adder bites occur on humans yearly and only a handful require serious medical attention.

What to do if a pet has been bitten:

Try to keep the animal calm and still and take it immediately to a vet.
