Enhancing your garden: Wintering sites

'Hibernacula' are places where amphibians and reptiles can see out the cold winter months. Lay down some old logs, brick-rubble or similar, and then pack the spaces loosely with wood chips. Cover the whole thing with excavated soil to keep the warmth in. Make sure your wintering site is located where the soil drains well. Very soon grasses and other plants will start to grow over the top and it will quickly blend in with the rest of the garden.
