ARC's Dorset Reserves Community Officer is encouraging
local people in the Bournemouth area to get involved on our urban
heathland reserves. The project is funded by the National Lottery
through the Heritage Lottery fund.
Who? The Dorset Reserves Community Officer is working with people local to
some of our urban heathlands in Dorset, organising walks, events and
volunteer work parties to get everybody involved in looking after this
important habitat that is so vital for many of our reptile and amphibian
species.
Why? Many of our reserves in Dorset are pockets of heathland within highly
urban areas - unfortunately this means they're sometimes subject to
misuse by people who don't understand the importance of these sites. The
Dorset Reserves Community Officer is helping to encourage interest,
understanding and responsible use, as well as support and involvement
from local communities.
What? The project focuses on ten of our urban
reserves: Creech Heath (Wareham and Corfe), Dunyeats Hill (Broadstone,
Poole), East Worgret (Wareham), Ferndown Common (Ferndown), Great Ovens
(Wareham), Lions Hill (Ashley Heath), Lytchett Heath (Lytchett Minster),
Noon Hill (Verwood), Parley Common (Ferndown) and Town Common
(Christchurch). There are regular volunteer work parties as well as
other events organised throughout the year.
