Apart from the appalling destruction of fire it takes a long time for heather to re-establish itself. Worse still, other, undesirable plants, are quick to take advantage of this and have to be destroyed. Here, Rhododendron, has quickly taken advantage of the vacancy. Unfortunately, beautiful as it may be, this is an alien plant which has nothing to offer any native species - effectively it is a habitat destroying weed.
