| Particularly in the north of the country the Natterjack Toad is found primarily in coastal dune systems. This is typical of such habitat and of particular note is the shallow pond in the centre of the picture. Often artificial for the benefit of the toads, such ponds are referred to as scrapes. These same dune valleys will often contain naturally marshy areas with natural ponds referred to as slacks. Due to their proximity to the sea both can become brackish but the toads and their larvae can cope with this to an extent. |
