Gems in the Dunes - Summer Events 2019 Join our Gems in the Dunes team this summer on a series of events and activities. Covering the entire length of the Sefton Sand Dunes, you will be taken around some truly unique sites and discover the 'Gems in the Dunes'! With something for everyone, booking is essential to avoid disappointment. Guided walks and family events: Phone photography walk - Everyone loves a selfie, who can take the best one out on the sand dunes, or take a close look at what’s around you. Sunday 14th July @10.30am-12.30pm – Ainsdale Discovery Centre Night time Natterjacks on the beach - The nocturnal natterjacks are feeding on the beach in the evening! Join for an evening walk to see them in action. Wednesday 17th July @ 9.30pm-11pm – Ainsdale Discovery Centre Beetles ‘R’ Brill - Fast, fierce and flamboyant! Beetles come in all shapes, sizes and colours. Come and catch a couple and create your own beetle work of art to take home. Sunday 21st July @ 10am-12.30pm – Ainsdale Discovery Centre The history of Hightown - Join us to find out about this often ignored area of dune and all its hidden secrets. Tuesday 13th August @ 6pm-8pm – end of Blundell Road, Hightown Devil’s Hole at dusk - A sunset walk through National Trust Formby’s reserve to one of the coasts most interesting features. Tuesday 20th August @ 6pm-8pm – Jubilee Road, Formby Mini-beast mayhem - A fun activity hunting and crafting mini-beasts! Can you race a Tiger beetle, the fastest insect on the coast? Or create a bug work of art! Wednesday 21st August @ 1pm-3pm – Ainsdale Discovery Centre World in miniature - Can you find the smallest plants and animals on the coast – maybe a mini lettuce or a speedy beetle. Take a closer look and create your own mini dune-scape! Wednesday 28th August @ 1pm-3pm – Ainsdale Discovery Centre Batty about bats - A chance to join local 'bat man' for an evening walk learning about the bats of the coast. Thursday 29th August @ 7.45pm-10pm – Ainsdale Discovery Centre Creative writing events: Join our creative writing expert Hazel, to look at the coast in a different way. Using the natural landscape to inspire your stories and poems. Discover facts about the wildlife you will find in the dunes, and enter imaginary worlds through your own poetry and story-making. Saturday 27th July @ 10am-12.30pm - Ainsdale Discovery Centre Symbols in the sand - Take an evening walk through the inspiring landscape of the Sefton coastal dunes at National Trust Formby in the company of a conservation expert and a writer. Connect with this special place, and with your own creativity, through walking, talking, and writing. Wednesday 28th August @ 6pm-8pm – National Trust Formby, Victoria Road Beach car park Arts events: Build a lizard - A fantastic workshop with sculptor Faith Bebbington, creating large 3D Sand lizard sculptures. Saturday 10th August @ 10am-4pm –To be confirmed World lizard day exhibition - Come and see our lizard exhibition – a display of artworks & sculptures created by the local community. Discover why lizards love the coast so much and join in with our mini-beast hunt and craft activities throughout the day. Wednesday 14th August @ 11am-3pm – Ainsdale Discovery Centre Join artists Sian Hughes and Sarah-Jane Richards for a series of art workshops – engage with the natural environment in a new and interesting way: Cyanotype workshop - Use the sunlight to create stunning blue & white images of the landscape around us at this Back from the Brink workshop for adults. Saturday 17th August @ 10am-12pm – Ainsdale Discovery Centre Drawing in the dunes - Create an acrylic landscape painting of the dunes, flora, sky and sea, at this Back from the Brink art workshop for adults. We are working in partnership with National Trust Formby to discover more about the Gems found in the Dunes Sunday 18th August @ 1pm-3pm – St Lukes Church, Formby, L37 2DF Porcelain art workshop - Capture an impression of the landscape in porcelain paper clay at this Back from the Brink art workshop for adults.
