Amphibian and Reptile Conservation (ARC) and Amphibian and Reptile Groups of UK (ARG UK), are delighted to announce the 2020 Herpetofauna Workers’ Meeting, which is to be held at the Waterfront, Southport on 15 and 16 February 2020.

Running annually for over 30 years, this popular two-day event occupies the centre stage of the herpetological calendar. Once again, we offer a full and varied programme of presentations and workshops with plenty of opportunities to network. The meeting attracts a diverse audience representing: conservation organisations, ecological consultants, statutory bodies, land managers, academic institutions and students, and enthusiastic volunteers.

This year’s Herpetofauna Worker’s Meeting promises to be extra special. The meeting will be linking up with Gems in the Dunes, ARC’s ground-breaking project to conserve threatened species on the Sefton Coast. Gems in the Dunes is part of the national Back from the Brink programme, a multi-partner project that works at a landscape scale across a range of threatened species. As part of this programme we are examining critical issues affecting species conservation, and this will be featured in conference presentations and workshops.

For the first time we’re also offering a chance to roll up your sleeves and get involved in habitat management, under the guidance of the Gems in the Dunes staff, in an optional Friday excursion. There will also be a less strenuous option for a guided walk in the dunes with our partners North Merseyside ARG. The Back from the Brink programme is contributing funding towards this year’s conference, with generous support from a range of funders including the National Lottery Heritage Fund. This means that we’ve been able to reduce the registration rate, making attendance even more affordable.

Alongside this, we have analysed feedback from previous conferences and made sure that we cater for as many requests as possible. This means that we’re offering presentations and workshops aimed at both volunteers and professionals, across a range of species and locations. For example, we’ll be hearing the latest on amphibian diseases from a world expert, discovering the history of urban grass snakes, unravelling toad declines, and offering a chance to feed in to a review of great crested newt District Level Licensing. Knowing that herpers need some down-time alongside the serious sessions, we’ve also programmed in plenty of space for networking, and as well as the usual Gala Dinner we've brought back the “Have I Got Newts For You?” quiz. We can’t wait to see you in Southport - book now!
