Our Snakes in the Heather Nurture Nature Sundays have been put together for groups of families and friends who want to support local wildlife whilst learning all about it too. They usually take place on Parley Common in Dorset; a heathland nature reserve which is home to all sorts of wonderful and unique species including reptiles like the smooth snake. However, they can take place on any ARC managed nature reserve in Dorset, Hampshire or Surrey.

We will start the day by getting stuck in with some practical tasks. This might be using hand tools such as saws and loppers (a type of large scissor used for cutting twigs, branches and small plants) to remove invasive birch, pine and gorse, 'bracken bashing' or litter picking. (Children must be supervised at all times). We will stop for a spot of lunch at about 12 and then we will finish the day with some educational fun and games.

Nurture Nature Sundays are designed to increase confidence when out and about in our natural spaces. The activities may be adapted if it is wet or windy; there is no such thing as bad weather, only unsuitable clothing! Please dress in layered clothing and bring lunch and drinks for the day.

Booking by the Friday before is essential and you can book multiple days. Each booking must have at least 1 responsible adult. The maximum group size is 5 in accordance with social distancing guidance. For available times and dates see below. These events are free of charge as part of the Snakes in the Heather project.
