Amphibian and Reptile Conservation are delighted to announce that our ‘Connecting the Dragons’ project (www.arc-trust.org/connecting-the-dragons) has been awarded National Lottery funding.  The grant will allow the project to bring together key partners including volunteer Amphibian and Reptile Groups, NGOs and local Wildlife Trusts, to protect and conserve some of our most vulnerable native species of amphibian and reptile including: great crested newts, adders, toads, and grass snakes.

• The great crested newt (Triturus cristatus), a true water dragon! Dramatic declines and pond loss have led to European-level protection.
• The adder (Vipera berus), which is Wales' only venomous snake species. Often misunderstood and sometimes persecuted.
• The grass snake (Natrix natrix), a semi-aquatic predator of amphibians. Needs piles of compost or manure for laying its eggs.
• The common toad (Bufo bufo), known for its impressive and precarious spring migrations to ponds. Suffers from traffic mortality and lack of habitat connectivity.

Tony Gent, CEO of Amphibian and Reptile Conservatin, commented, “We are delighted to have secured National Lottery funding for this important project, which will enable us to improve the conservation status of our declining herpetofauna species.”

We are also thrilled to count on the support of Iolo Williams who says “It is essential to engage with our Welsh communities to create more ponds, increase wildlife monitoring efforts and improve the image of species like the adder. ARC has a proven track record of delivering ambitious landscape scale projects and exceeding targets.”

The Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) grant will enable ARC to train volunteers to monitor and conserve priority species by improving their habitat across South Wales. Habitat creation to reconnect populations of these ‘at risk’ species, will be targeted towards key sites as identified early in the project, based on habitat assessments and spatial modelling. Once suitable sites for habitat rehabilitation have been identified, local wildlife volunteer groups and other community groups will be invited to engage with practical conservation tasks. As well as the health and social benefits of working alongside other volunteers in Wales’ beautiful natural environment; volunteers will experience the added satisfaction of helping to monitor the impact of their efforts, by surveying for amphibians and reptiles. This process of engagement will allow local communities to understand better the ecology and diversity of their local environment, and feel more connected with the natural world.

The Development Phase of this inspirational new project will run from Spring 2018, and will focus on developing partnerships, and planning an exciting range of events and volunteer opportunities for the next stage of the bid to HLF. If successful, the project will then run for a further four years.

• Y fadfall ddŵr gribog (Triturus cristatus), draig ddŵr go iawn! Mae gostyngiad syfrdanol yn ei niferoedd a cholli pyllau dŵr wedi arwain at ei gwarchod ar lefel Ewropeaidd.
• Y wiber (Vipera berus), yw’r unig neidr wenwynig yng Nghymru. Caiff ei chamddeall yn aml a’i herlid o bryd i’w gilydd.

Dywedodd Tony Gent, Prif Weithredwr Gwarchod Amffibiaid ac Ymlusgiaid, “Rydym ni’n hynod falch ein bod wedi sicrhau cyllid gan y Loteri Genedlaethol ar gyfer y prosiect pwysig hwn, a fydd yn ein galluogi ni i wella statws gwarchodaeth ein rhywogaethau ffawna amffibiaid ac ymlusgiaid sy’n dirywio”.

Rydym ni wrth ein boddau hefyd ein bod yn gallu dibynnu ar gefnogaeth Iolo Williams sy’n dweud ei bod “yn hanfodol i ymgysylltu â’n cymunedau yng Nghymru er mwyn creu mwy o byllau dŵr, cynyddu ymdrechion i fonitro bywyd gwyllt a gwella’r ddelwedd sydd gan rywogaethau fel y wiber. Mae gan yr Ymddiriedolaeth Gwarchod Amffibiaid ac Ymlusgiaid hanes llwyddiannus o gyflawni prosiectau ar raddfa tirwedd uchelgeisiol a rhagori ar dargedau.”

Bydd grant Cronfa Treftadaeth y Loteri yn galluogi Gwarchod Amffibiaid ac Ymlusgiaid i hyfforddi gwirfoddolwyr i fonitro a gwarchod rhywogaethau â blaenoriaeth drwy wella eu cynefinoedd ledled de Cymru. Bydd creu cynefinoedd i ailgysylltu poblogaethau o’r rhywogaethau hyn sydd ‘mewn perygl’ yn cael ei dargedu at safleoedd allweddol a nodir yn gynnar yn y prosiect, ar sail asesiad o’r cynefin a modelu gofodol. Ar ôl nodi safleoedd addas i adfer cynefinoedd, gwahoddir grwpiau bywyd gwyllt gwirfoddol lleol, ynghyd â grwpiau cymunedol eraill, i ymgymryd â thasgau gwarchod ymarferol. Daw’r gwaith ochr yn ochr â gwirfoddolwyr eraill, yn amgylchedd natur prydferth Cymru, â buddion iechyd a chymdeithasol i’r gwirfoddolwyr, a byddant hefyd yn teimlo’r boddhad o helpu i fonitro effaith eu hymdrechion, drwy wneud arolygon am amffibiaid ac ymlusgiaid. Bydd y broses ymgysylltu hon yn caniatáu i gymunedau lleol ddeall ecoleg ac amrywiaeth eu hamgylchedd lleol yn well, a theimlo’n fwy cysylltiedig â byd natur.

Bydd Cam Datblygu’r prosiect ysbrydoledig hwn yn dechrau o Wanwyn 2018 ymlaen, a bydd yn canolbwyntio ar ddatblygu partneriaethau, a chynllunio amrywiaeth o ddigwyddiadau cyffrous, yn ogystal â chyfleoedd i wirfoddoli ar gyfer cam nesaf y cais i Gronfa Treftadaeth y Loteri. Os bydd y cais yn llwyddiannus yna bydd y prosiect yn parhau am bedair blynedd ychwanegol.
