The National Lottery Heritage Fund has awarded over £428,000 to Amphibian and Reptile Conservation (ARC) to help Wales’ most threatened amphibians and reptiles.

Amphibians and reptiles are vital components of our ecosystems, but are suffering from lack of good habitat, landscape fragmentation and public misunderstanding.

With help from National Lottery Players, ARC and its partners will work with hundreds of volunteers and citizen scientists to conserve habitats, build a vital record of populations and find out what needs to be done to secure the future of these species.

Across the world, 40% of all amphibians are under threat of extinction and the figure for reptiles may be even higher. Wales’ species need our help too. The new Connecting the Dragons project will operate across southern Wales, focusing on the five species known to be most under threat there – the sand lizard, adder, grass snake, great crested newt and common toad.

There is no doubt that they are at risk. Loss of habitats such as heathlands and ponds, increasing pressures from development and fragmentation, and public misunderstanding of these important species (including in the case of snakes persecution) have all played their part.

ARC has launched its Connecting the Dragons project with support from a number of other organisations including the Wildlife Trusts, Natural Resources Wales, RSPB, National Trust, Local Authorities and community groups. The project will:

• Conserve important amphibian and reptile habitats across southern Wales
• Train hundreds of volunteers to record, monitor and survey populations
• Embark on an ambitious programme of habitat restoration and creation
• Raise awareness of these fascinating and important creatures and inspire people to look after their local biodiversity with an engaging community programme
• Share findings with organisations across the UK to inform future conservation work.

The project will have wider benefits for nature too. Amphibians and reptiles are important components of our ecosystems, preying on invertebrates and small mammals, and themselves becoming food for a variety of other predators. So the presence of good amphibian and reptile populations is a sign that habitats are healthy.

Dr Tony Gent, ARC’s Chief Executive Officer, said: “We would like to say a big ‘thank you’ to National Lottery players for helping us to launch this exciting project. This vital funding will enable us to make a big difference to the conservation of amphibians and reptiles in Wales over the coming years.”

Richard Bellamy, Director for the National Lottery Heritage Fund in Wales said: “Wales is a stronghold for so many rare species and habitats that we think it is an important part of our role to be providing funding to support groups who are protecting and also taking measures to tell people about what they can find in and around where they live. We are very conscious of where the money is raised - it’s raised by National Lottery players playing the games each week. We took a recent consultation and asked them what they wanted the money spent on and one of the highest priorities was the natural environment.”

Mae cronfa treftadaeth y loteri genedlaethol wedi dyfarndalu dros £428,000 i Gwarchod Amffibiaid ac Ymlusgiaid (ARC) i helpu amffibiaid ac ymlusgiaid sydd mwyaf dan fygythiad yng Nghymru.

Mae amffibiaid ac ymlusgiaid yn gydrannau hanfodol o’n hecosystemau, ond maent yn dioddef trwy ddiffyg cynefinoedd da, darnio tirweddau a chamddealltwriaeth y cyhoedd.

Gyda help gan chwaraewyr y loteri genedlaethol, fydd ARC a’u partneriaid yn gweithio gyda channoedd o wirfoddolwyr a gwyddonwyr dinesydd i warchod cynefinoedd, adeiladu cofnodion hanfodol o boblogaethau a darganfod beth sydd angen ei gwneud i ddiogelu dyfodol y rhywogaethau yma.

Mae ARC wedi lansio ei phrosiect Cysylltu’r Dreigiau gyda chymorth gan nifer o sefydliadau gan gynnwys, Ymddiriedolaethau Bywyd Gwyllt, Cyfoeth Naturiol Cymru, RSPB, Ymddiriedolaeth Genedlaethol, awdurdodau lleol, a grwpiau cymunedol. Fe fydd y prosiect yn:

• Gwarchod cynefinoedd sy’n bwysig i amffibiaid ac ymlusgiaid ar draws de Cymru
• Hyfforddi cannoedd o wirfoddolwyr i gofnodi, monitro ac arolygu poblogaethau
• Byrddio ar raglen uchelgeisiol o adnewyddiant a chreadigaeth cynefinoedd.
• Cynyddu ymwybyddiaeth o’r anifeiliaid diddorol a phwysig ac ysbrydoli pobl i edrych ar ôl eu bioamrywiaeth gyda rhaglen ymgysylltiad cymunedol.
• Rhannu casgliadau gyda sefydliadau ar draws y DU i oleuo gwaith cadwraeth y dyfodol.

Fe fydd y prosiect yn cynnig buddion ehangach i natur hefyd. Mae amffibiaid ac ymlusgiaid yn gydrannau pwysig o’n hecosystemau, yn ysglyfaethu infertebratau a mamolion bach, a'u hyn yn fwyd i amrywiaeth o ysglyfaethwyr arall. Felly mae presenoldeb poblogaethau cryf o amffibiaid ac ymlusgiaid yn arwydd o gynefinoedd iach.

Dywedodd Dr Tony Gent, prif weithredwr ARC: “Hoffwn i ddweud ‘diolch’ mawr i chwaraewyr y Loteri genedlaethol am helpu i ni lansio’r prosiect cynhyrfus yma. Dywedodd Richard Bellamy cyfarwyddwr cronfa treftadaeth y loteri genedlaethol yng Nghymru: “Mae Cymru’n gadarnle i gymaint o rywogaethau a chynefinoedd prin felly rydym yn meddwl ei fod yn rhan bwysig o’n rôl i fod yn darparu cyllid i gefnogi grwpiau sy’n diogelu a hefyd yn ceisio dweud wrth bobl beth sydd i’w gweld mewn ac o gwmpas yr ardaloedd maent yn byw. Rydym yn ymwybodol iawn o le mae’r arian yn dod – mae wedi codi gan chwaraewyr y Loteri genedlaethol yn chwarae’r camau bob wythnos. Fe gymeron ni ymgynghoriad diweddar, a gofynnon ni sut hoffen nhw weld yr arian yn cael ei wario ac un o’r blaenoriaethau uchaf oedd yr amgylchedd naturiol.”
